Workforce Training & Program Development

The mission of the Workforce Training and Program Development Department is to lead the organization in innovation by providing effective and efficient workforce development needs to the provider network. We strive to provide continuous support to the community through educational outreach and engagement while placing an emphasis on recovery and supporting resilience.

This is done by creating a Learning Management System dedicated to improving the competency and retention of the behavioral health workforce. They are responsible for creating, retaining and ensuring there is a transfer of knowledge within the network to maintain a trained and qualified workforce, and ultimately improve care and services for our members and their families. Using proven Evidence Based Practices, they offer the most current trainings and curriculums in the field to advance the knowledge and skill of the workforce. As the Network gains knowledge and experience, it increases the workforce capability to deliver quality services and care and contributes to their ability to lead the region in integrated health care.

Responsibilities for this team also include providing ongoing consultation to other departments, assisting in the development, implementation, and monitoring of evidence-based evidence based, best and/or promising practices while assessing workforce needs, and strategically planning and implementing ways to address the gaps through training and grantsmanship.

This team maintains the Detroit Wayne Connect (DWC) website, a continuing education platform for stakeholders of the behavioral health workforce. They strive to provide a variety of live and online courses for those serving adults with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, children with serious emotional disturbances and persons with substance use disorders.

The Workforce Training and Program Development team coordinates conferences, workshops and seminars throughout the system of care.  They create, develop and identify the curricula necessary to ensure competencies in Integrated Health care, Quality, Best Practices, & more.

Monthly trainings are provided in evidence-based, best and/or promising practices. Topics may include mental health awareness through Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), suicide prevention through Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), as well as  continued education credits and training in the areas of trauma and co-occurring disorders. Conferences and other workforce events focusing on the care of adults with severe mental illness are originated and executed through the Clinical Practice Improvement Department as well.
