Nicole G: Committed While Sheltering in Place
Keeping My Routine and Keeping It Real
By Margaret Keyes-Howard, M.A., DWIHN Member Engagement Team
Nicole G., is a Constituent’s Voice (CV) Leader, DWIHN Ambassador and Certified Independent Facilitator. During this “Shelter in Place” time, Nicole has continued her volunteer work by making phone calls all over the metro Detroit area, finding resources and information for people receiving services from DWIHN and anyone else who may need a helping hand.
“I am very committed to make sure that my fellow peers know that a temporary shut-down doesn’t mean we are not here to help. I feel that keeping people connected and helping them meet their needs is an essential part of my work that just doesn’t stop because of a pandemic, in fact the needs are greater”, stated Nicole. “I wear many hats, I like to help people get comfortable with me so I can guide them into an independent lifestyle that is supported by self-care and advocacy. It’s a great feeling to volunteer with DWIHN because they really foster a system of care that allows participants to grow and give back, it’s a rewarding privilege for me to do for others.”
One of the more recent efforts of Nicole, is connecting members to resources such as food banks, hygiene packages, and assisting with a messaging group to help DWIHN members better understand how sheltering in place is keeping them safe, not restricting their options on life. Nicole has also researched several companies and private businesses that have social responsibility activities going on and are giving back to the community in various ways which she will make available to all of the CV leaders in the near future.
Nicole is a proud mother of three children and Nana to three she is excited to have recently learned she will have a new granddaughter this year. Nicole is making plans for a big family celebration as soon as the sheltering order is lifted, she stated “I am a touching, hugging, kissing Nana and mom, I can’t wait to get them all in my arms and love on them.”
