Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network Hosts “Walk for Mental Health” on May 30

Agency will Unveil New Website and SMART Bus Partnership
DETROIT, MI - May 29,2026 — The Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN) will host its first annual Walk for Mental Health, on Saturday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at O’Hair Park in Detroit. The walk is designed to bring residents together to raise awareness about mental health, wellness, and the importance of community connection.
The walk will begin and end at O’Hair Park (20427 Stahelin), with the route passing the new DWIHN 7 Mile Behavioral Health Wellness Campus (18510 W. Seven Mile Rd.). The free event will include community resources, family activities, music, and food.
“This walk is about reminding people that mental health matters and that no one should feel alone,” said James E. White, President and CEO of DWIHN. “We want residents to know there are resources, support systems and people in this community who care. Events like this help reduce stigma, encourage conversation and connect families to services that can truly change lives.”
Mental health challenges continue to impact families across Michigan and the nation. According to recent national data, nearly 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition each year, while 1 in 6 children between the ages of 6 and 17 experience a mental health disorder annually. Communities continue seeing increased stress, anxiety, depression and substance use concerns following the lasting impacts of the pandemic and economic instability.
“Every resident deserves access to the support and resources they need to live a healthy and fulfilling life,” said Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans. “Too many people face challenges in silence, but help is available and recovery is possible. By raising awareness, encouraging conversations and connecting people to services, we can build a stronger, more compassionate Wayne County for everyone.”
“We want Detroiters to feel supported in every aspect.” Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield said. “Creating spaces like this where residents can get connected to resources that impact the way they succeed in a positive way is how we continue to grow as a city. DWIHN is a great partner in leading and supporting this effort.”
The event will also feature remarks from Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison, Detroit Council President James Tate and Wayne County Sheriff Raphael Washington. Other local leaders and community partners will be in attendance to support a renewed focus on wellness, public safety and healing-centered community engagement.
“Mental health impacts every neighborhood, every family and every generation,” said Chief Bettison. “Creating safe community spaces where residents can come together, walk, talk and connect is critical. We know stronger mental health support leads to safer and healthier communities”.
In addition, DWIHN will promote its newly revamped website (www.dwihn.org), providing greater access and information to its members and the public. Lastly, with its ongoing partnership with Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART), walkers and guests will get a sneak peak of its wrapped bus, featuring DWIHN team members and leadership.
The event is free and open to all residents, including families, youth, seniors, community organizations and advocates. Food and a free T-shirt will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
