Access Behavioral Health Services & Crisis Management

Crisis Services ensures appropriate access to behavioral health services and crisis management for adults and children experiencing a crisis, including assessment, care coordination, and referrals to the most appropriate level of care. The DWIHN crisis services department consists of dedicated staff trained in the DWIHN crisis continuum who are consistently available for all those experiencing a behavioral health crisis.

Screening

Emergency Crisis Screening for Children and Adults

Should a member or their family experience a behavioral health crisis, DWIHN members that go to an emergency room will be evaluated by a DWIHN crisis screener. 

 

Emergency room staff will contact the DWIHN Pre-Admission Review (PAR) Dispatch team to dispatch a trained clinician who will assess the crisis and provide additional supports toward recovery through the most appropriate level of care necessary.

Crisis Stabilization Units (CSU): Walk-in alternatives to the emergency room

When experiencing a behavioral health crisis, adults are welcome to go to a Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU). CSUs are open 24/7 where the following services are provided:

  • Immediate crisis support up to 72 hours.

  • Supervised care to help de-escalate the severity of the crisis.

  • Stabilization and service connection.

Mobile Crisis Stabilization

The DWIHN Mobile Crisis Stabilization Unit can deploy trained clinicians to the scene of a crisis to assist in de-escalation, service connection, and resource provision should there be no immediate safety concerns 24/7, 365. Should there be significant safety concerns, contact 911.

Access to Services

The Access Unit ensures appropriate access to behavioral health services and crisis management. Access and Crisis Services work in collaboration with other departments to ensure access to DWIHN’s full array of services as well as the Crisis Continuum Service System.
