Board Approves $1.9M in funds for Summer Youth Employment
DETROIT, MI – May 22, 2026 — The Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN) Board of Directors, on Wednesday, May 20, approved $1.9 million in funding to support summer youth employment initiatives across Wayne County. The investment reflects DWIHN’s ongoing commitment to sustaining impactful youth employment programming while navigating an evolving funding landscape.
“These youth are not only our future, they are our now,” said James E. White, DWIHN President and CEO. “Now more than ever, we can’t lose focus on developing young leaders with tools to fight stigma in our communities.”
Youth participants will receive meaningful work experience, as well as exposure to behavioral health education, including prevention, treatment, and access to care information.
Through partnerships with municipalities, community organizations, and DWIHN provider agencies, the program is expected to employ more than 850 youth between the ages of 14 and 24. Teens will generally work up to 20 hours per week for six weeks during the summer.
The funding will support participation in the Grow Detroit’s Young Talent (GDYT) program and other county and community-based youth employment initiatives operating from June 1 through September 20. Notable program partners include the East Side Community Network, the Downriver Community Conference, and the cities of Bellville, Hamtramck, Highland Park and Van Buren Township.
“The Board of Directors is honored to approve funding that invests in the comprehensive development of career skill sets of our youth.” said Jonathan C. Kinloch, DWIHN Board Chairperson. “Building on their personal growth, expanding their professional horizons, and thereby strengthening the future of our community”
The initiative aligns with DWIHN’s broader mission of supporting the health, wellness, and long-term success of individuals and families throughout the region.
“From our Mental Health Youth Council and our Mental Health Ambassador Scholarships to our continued support providing valuable employment experience and the skills to succeed, DWIHN invests in the lives of our youth” said White.
